    Rosemary Neave

Rosemary is a networker and is the face behind www.womentravel.co.nz website which advertises the unique travel opportunities for women in NZ.

She is very involved in the local community in tourism and other networks and has organised the Winter@Waipu festival.

She also has an interest in contemporary spirituality and post institutional christianity. She was involved in setting up a website called futurechurch NZ

Before that Rosemary was a builder - she designed and built the Studio at the Lodge with our neighbour Claire. She also worked for 14 years as the Co-ordinator for the WRC - a christian feminist organisation.

Waihoihoi Lodge was the joint vision of Rosemary and her partner of 17 years Ngaire Brader. They celebrated their love for each other in a Civil Unioin Ceremony in October 2006.  Ngaire died of cancer in November 2006.

More about our Civil Union and Ngaire's memorable farewell.

    Rosemary and Hildegard

Hildegard is our Standard Schnauzer - don't be put off by her bark of welcome. She soon learns that visitors are simply another pair of hands to pat her and throw the ball.

    Ngaire Brader

Ngaire was passionate about gardening, and enjoyed the challenge of five acres of land to develop and nurture. Each evening she would delight in bringing in the produce of the garden to share with guests.

    Ceridwyn Parr and Danielle Melton

Ceriwyn and Danielle have been part of theregular hosting team at Waihoihoi Lodge.

From Easter 2008 they will be returning to run Watershed Cottage, a women's B&B/Retreat north of Thames, However they will remain as occasional hosts at Waihoihoi until it closes in August.

"We have been together since the beginning of this century, and a bit more! We came together over our shared passion for Hildegard of Bingen. This blossomed into us presenting over 60 dramatic performances of her life and music, in New Zealand and in England. We had so much fun and met so many people as we explored her work."

Ceridwyn and Danielle both have a strong interest in Spirituality and will be offering Watershed Time both for groups and individuals at Waihoihoi Lodge.

    More about Watershed Time

    and Danielle and Ceridwyn

    Our name....

Waihoihoi - the Lodge is named after the river that flows through Waipu, and which begins in the hills near us. We do not know how the river got this name which means something like noisy waters.

    Why Especially for Women?

We believe there is a growing need for ventures that cater in a particular way for the women's travel market - women who want to leave the family behind for a girls weekend away, women travelling alone, mothers and daughters taking some quality time together, women's groups wanting somewhere to have a weekend away, or lesbians wanting to holiday in an accepting environment. more

Mixed groups of men and women

are welcome in the Studio and to book the whole of the Lodge. More about group bookings

    About the Waihoihoi Buildings

Builder at workThe Studio was built by Rosemary and neighbour Claire Leighton. The plans were drawn by Rosemary with design help from Andrew Tremain, inspired by traditional NZ farm buildings and Maori architecture. Colours by Wendy Earles.

Waihoihoi Lodge was designed and built by Auckland based design team Andrew Tremain and Karen Way. A simple gable roof construction with north facing verandas have provided a framework for some innovative design. Andrew was project manager and Karen's flair is visible in the intricate paua mosaics and tiles which adorn the entrance and the ensuites. Materials were mostly sourced locally. Colours and interiors by Wendy Earles The outdoor couches were created by Andy Waugh, who was a local sculptor - that is him with the concrete mixer!

Vortex Pacific Textiles in Whangarei have designed the fabulous bed covers in Te Ra and The Studio

This is also the first project in the world to use the innovative Streamline Skirting and Architrave system developed by Waipu inventor Noel Clement. Using a patented aluminium extrusion for the skirting board, Streamline offers a contemporary negative detail - with no ledge to trap dust. The architrave detail also offers smooth modern lines, with no ledges (protruding from the surface) to catch dust and protrude from the surface. For more information about Streamline
